What time is worship?
We worship every Sunday at 10am throughout the year in the church Sanctuary. We also hold special worship services for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Blessing of the Pets (October), Thanksgiving, and multiple services for Christmas Eve.
Where can I park?
Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church is located in downtown North Plainfield and because of the close-knit nature of our surrounding community, we do not enjoy the benefits of a parking lot. However, there is usually ample parking on the various side streets around the church building. We encourage you to observe all posted parking regulations to avoid tickets.
How should I enter the Watchung Avenue building?
Our building can be accessed during the week via the double red doors at 170 Watchung Avenue. During the week, the building is locked because of the schools who utlize our space. Please use the appropriate buzzer to access the building. On Sunday mornings the main Sanctuary doors are unlocked to come into worship, which are located on Watchung Avenue. It is a few steps to come into these doors. If you need handicapped access into the building you may access the ramp and door on Fairview Avenue to enter the church building.
Who can answer my questions about your congregations when I visit on Sundays?
Every Sunday an Elder Greeter is assigned to greet visitors to Watchung Avenue. Please look on the back page of the church bulletin that you will be given as you enter worship for the name of the Elder Greeter who will be ready to welcome you that Sunday in worship. Please also fill out a visitor card that you will find in the pew rack where you are seated and place it into the church offering plate so that Pastor Shannan can follow up with you for a visit during the week after worship.
Where can my children be during worship?
Children are welcome in worship at Watchung Avenue. One of our Deacons who will greet you at the door when you enter with your bulletin will also have a children’s bulletin, crayons, and a children’s worship bag for your child(ren). Children stay in worship until the Children’s Sermon, and after that they go downstairs for Church School. There is also a volunteer-staffed nursery for babies and toddlers during worship every Sunday and which is equipped with a two-way radio so that the nursery teachers can communicate with the Deacons if a child has a need during worship and you need to be contacted. If for any reason your children do not want to leave you, or you do not want to leave them, they are very welcome to remain with us throughout the entire worship service.
How can I get my child baptized?
Baptism is open at any time to parent(s) who are members at Watchung Avenue. Click here for information about membership. Please see Pastor Shannan for information and/or questions about baptism.
Can I hold my wedding and/or union ceremony at WAPC?
Weddings are available in our church sanctuary or offsite. If you are interested in having your wedding at Watchung Avenue or engaging our Pastor for your offsite wedding please contact the Church office for scheduling and pricing.
We regret that due to policy language in the Presbyterian Church (USA) we are prevented from providing same-gender union ceremonies/weddings at the church. The leadership of Watchung Avenue is committed to working to remove restrictive practices within the Presbyterian Church (USA) which is why we have partnered with Presbyterian Welcome. Pastor Shannan would be happy to speak to any members of the GLBT community at any time and we are committed to being a welcoming congregation that is actively involved in helping our larger denomination to mirror the inclusive love we celebrate in Jesus Christ.
