Mission Trip Day One: Part Two

6/27/2011

Day one of our Mission Retreat -- Lily and Shelby cont.

(That’s right >:D more stuff happened in like the 2 hours since we posted)

More photos from tonight here, we learned about the gardens at Stony Point Center, and also about some of the things growing here!

After dinner, we met with the local food and environmental educator, Varga Garland, and she took us around the camp, showing us the various gardens that they have, and the compost piles that they’ve started. They have a very large compost pile in the back of the camp, closest to our worksite where we found out that they once threw out old pumpkins and now they have small pumpkin plants starting to grow. We also learned that every spare piece of food or every morsel of food that doesn’t get used from the kitchen is put into a bin that they leave at the Drop-Off dish counter, helping other people staying at the camp practice reusing organic materials in order to make fertilizer for the various fruits and vegetables that they grow on their own.

After our tour around the camp, we came back to our lodge to have our Bible Study, and we all discussed Luke 6, verses 1-11.  It was interesting, and we learned a lot about the ways that everyone else in our group thinks about the phrases in the Bible into a better and easier context. Afterwards, we all sat down and played Pictionary; the teams were myself, Michael, Jake, John, and Jasmine, and Lily, Rob, Shannan, Benji,  and Chris. We had some weird clues. . . Bastille Day, Anubis, Theory of Relativity, Hermione Granger, and Tanzania, but it was a lot of great fun, and we had some wild guesses. Overall, it was an eventful night, and while we can’t wait to get to bed, I don’t think that we’ll be able to get to sleep for a while.

We are going canoeing  tomorrow, YAY  :D

(Yes we said that earlier, but we are excited. Fantastic Grammar, all of that schooling definitely paid off)
